IOM and the Municipality of Ioannina sign MoU towards integration and social inclusion
Ioannina – The International Organization for Migration (IOM) and the Municipality of Ioannina signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), aiming at further strengthening their cooperation towards joint activities for the benefit of migrants, refugees and local communities.
Both parties will work together for the promotion of equality and elimination of psychosocial and economic challenges faced by vulnerable groups and people in need, aiming at their social integration and active participation in all aspects of social life in Ioannina city, part of Epirus region.
“IOM and Ioannina have a long-standing collaboration focused on integration and social cohesion, with respect to diversity and inclusion. We are very proud to be part of this initiative, and we remain committed to the principle that humane and orderly migration benefits all”, said Sanja Celebic Lukovac, Chief of IOM Mission in Greece.
“We will continue working together with the Municipality and encourage social and economic development for the well-being of migrants and local communities”, she added.
Several initiatives to prevent violence against vulnerable groups and combat social stereotypes and gender discrimination will take place, together with the design, proposal, and participation in activities which focus on the cultural, economic, and social integration of migrants and refugees into the local community.
“The city of Ioannina has a long tradition of hospitality and solidarity. With this memorandum, we reaffirm our commitment to shape a society where every citizen, regardless their origin, can live, work and participate equally”, said Thomas Begas, Mayor of Ioannina.
“Our goal is to ensure that migrants who choose to live in our city have the support they need to integrate smoothly and contribute creatively to the local community”, he added.
Throughout the recent years, both parties have developed a close collaboration related to humane migration management, emergency response and integration, providing to migrants and refugees, including vulnerable populations and people in need a comprehensive network of services.
From January 2020 until August 2024, IOM under HELIOS integration project and with the valuable support of the Municipality of Ioannina operated in the city an Integration Learning Centre (ILC) for refugees in Epirus region, where specialized staff welcomed refugees and supported their integration process.
During this period, 1,179 refugees received accommodation support through rental subsidies, and 323 people received employability assistance to access the Greek labour market. In collaboration with the local actors 19 sensitization events took place, bringing together local and migrant community.
IOM’s presence in Ioannina began in 2013 with the implementation of Assisted Voluntary Return and Reintegration programme.
